Baseasechic is a remote town in northwestern Mexico, tucked away in the Sierra Madre Occidental. The town is inhabited by an indigenous group called the Tarahumara, who are amongst Mexico’s poorest citizens.

The Tarahumara are a marginalized community that just last January received emergency aid from the Red Cross when they faced widespread hunger due to a food crisis after a harsh cold snap and prolonged drought caused a massive food shortage.

The poverty in this community is difficult to comprehend, especially since it lays within a few hundred miles from the US border. The conditions for people are very harsh, and, of course, the conditions for animals are absolutely desperate.

There is no veterinary care within a 120 mile radius of this town, and the majority of the residents don’t have cars. The animals subsist along with the residents, scrounging for food, diseased, malnourished, breeding uncontrollably on the streets.

Compasion sin fronteras, the Mexican leg of Compassion without Borders, went to Baseasechic last November to hold a spay clinic and to provide humane euthanasia and veterinary care to the animals in that community. 150 animals were sterilized, 22 truly suffering animals were euthanized, and another couple dozen received veterinary care.

This is an area where our aid is critically needed and where we could have a meaningful impact.

CWOB’s goal is to return a few times to this town in 2013. Our next trip is scheduled for July, at which time we will also service Tomochic, another Taramhumara community nearby

We will try to raise funds to not only provide the sterilizations, but also to bring donations of dog and cat food, along with dog houses so that animals there can have some basic shelter and protection from the elements. We will also bring donations for the people in the community, as well.
